Birds have been devastating grain in Ghana and all over Africa for generations. Small plot farming by its nature fosters bird habitat in close proximity to grain fields. Birds lower grain yield for subsistence farmers from the time seed is first broadcast until ripening grain is ready for harvest. In Ghana and all over Africa the bird loss for rice is estimated to be as much as 80%. Estimates are not certain because there are confirmed reports of devastation of entire fields mixed in with lower estimates. It truly is a field by field story across Africa. One thing is certain, birds are recognized as a serious challenge to growing rice in the continent of Africa.
